THE RUBBERSEAL CASE

David John Stewart, from Rubberseal Ltd. contracted me to paint two coats over Rubberseal's new office in Kilmarnock.
He claimed that his office staff painted the first coats as well as they could, with cheap Leyland paint.
We clearly agreed in writing what I would paint: everything right of the corridor, which is situated after the reception area
and gives access to the four offices situated on its right.

I completed the job short of about 5 yards of skirting the joiners did not manage to fit in time.  Though that was not my fault,
I courteously deducted £50,00 from the job and billed Rubberseal Limited.

After a while, I saw that I had not received payment from them and contacted David John Stewart, the director.
David Stewart apologized and stated that he had sent the bill to accounts last week, but he had transferred £500,00 to my
account and that: 'He would let accounts know.'  I then sms'd the question:  'So I expect the remainder shortly?'
But he did not answer this question.

Four days later, I noticed that I had not yet received the remainder of the money.
I contacted David John Stewart and he ignored my message.
I then billed Rubberseal Ltd. with notification of intended litigation.

After this David John Stewart blackmailed me in the following manner:
If I would paint the reception area, which was not part of the quote, and fix some areas he claims are shady and some added facings,
door checks, door facings, window sills and skirtings that need to be primed and glossed, he would pay me the sum due, plus an extra £50,00: which tells us that I would have to paint the reception area, several door checks (not there when I was painting) added skirting (as I glossed all that were there) for just £50,00, to get my
£250,00 due.

Questions:
a) why did David John Stewart, director of Rubberseal Ltd pay me £500,00, assuring that accounts would pay the remaining £250,00?
b) how come this company still has not found a painter to paint their offices after all this time (almost 3 months)???
c) and should they be contracting anyone at all?
